Occupy Kurt Vile

If rock ‘n’ roll has always tried to distance itself from popular culture/ industry as much as it can (which may not be much at all, despite Johnny Rotten’s best efforts), indie rock has been particularly adamant in its (usually doomed) refusal. Indie rockers only support independent musicians at small venues, with iPhones in the pockets of our Urban Outfitters jeans. When faced with these contradictions, some cringe, look away or maybe even pour out some PBR in mourning. However, sometimes it’s simply too much to take, like when the superheroes of M83 licensed “Midnight City” to Victoria’s Secret and Spotify’s insufferable, endless commercials or when Kurt Vile licensed “Baby’s Arms” to Windows Phone and to Bank of America (and disguises it as this “beautiful, artistic, real to life” video).

Bon Iver prepares new material

Today Rolling Stone is reporting that Bon Iver’s much anticipated follow up to his sophomore EP Blood Bank will be hitting stores in June. The ten song set is sure to be a hit with the indie community, and even features a song Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon describes as a “Civil War-sounding heavy metal song.” Vernon has had a busy couple of years, first blowing up with the now classic debut album For Emma, Forever Ago and his follow up Blood Bank. Much touring gave way to much acclaim worldwide, so much so that other pop stars started to show interest in the group. Most notable of these famous fans is Kanye West, who featured Vernon and sampled Bon Iver on possibly the biggest album of last year. Look for Bon Iver’s new album this summer, and expect even bigger and better things for Vernon and Co.
