There is never a shortage of parties to be found around Penn’s campus by those in the know, and I’m sure everyone who went out for a night of drinking and dancing last Friday were perfectly content with their idea of a good time. However, many were blissfully ignorant about the real party that was occurring way on the other side of Center City, a veritable ruckus of pulsing sounds and lights, screaming and sweating that would have been the envy of every frat party-goer.

Of Montreal @ Electric Factory 9/15/2010

Of Montreal @ Electric Factory, September 15th, 2010

Of Montreal started their show exactly as one would expect them to start; their first song began with their singer dressed fully in drag from his frilly white skirt to his dark green eyeliner dancing in front of two men in costumes with fish heads and fake guns.  Every song during the show had some kind of theatrical flair to it, whether it be a different kind of dance, costume, or performance. One of the highlights of the show was the incredibly passionate violin solo by Of Montreal’s violinist/rhythm guitarist/keyboardist, which was equal parts classical music and heavily distorted electronic effects. Of Montreal started their set out with songs from their new LP, False Priest, the most notable being Coquet Coquette, Godly Intersex, Girl Named Hello and Sex Karma. Later on in the set the band played some of their older, more well-known songs, such as Gallery Piece and For Our Elegant Caste from their LP, Skeletal Lamping. The encore was equally as theatrical as the rest of the show, with four back-to-back Michael Jackson songs being played as all of the dancers came on stage at one time and thrashed about. All in all it was a great show, both musically and theatrically, and I got a really good sense of Of Montreal’s music as a whole from the varied setlist. Of Montreal is a must-see in concert.
