There’s James Blake the musician, whose eponymous debut album was critically acclaimed and lauded for its post-dub soundscapes, minimalist lyrics and sparse instrumentals. Then there’s James Blake the performer, who not only significantly transforms his songs for live renditions, but constructs a musical space that at moments can crush you underneath it’s heavy bass, and at other times can fill you with the lightest breath. I had heard that James Blake put on a good show, but I honestly had no idea how incredibly intimate one can get with his music when seeing him in concert.

After leaving a trail of EP’s spanning back to 2009, British dubstep artist James Blake will release his eponymous full-length effort on February 8. His hushed electronic sound is reminiscent of his fellow Brits, the xx, whose successful debut influenced Blake’s decision to produce and release his forthcoming album. Listen to Blake’s minimalist cover of Feist’s “Limit to Your Love” or check out the whole album when it drops on Tuesday.
